Former Airdrie Church Member Guilty of Sexual Offences on Young Men
Metropolitan Police say the 77-year-old abused his church roles to groom vulnerable young men, and detectives believe more victims may come forward.
On Monday, Wood Green Crown Court convicted former church deacon John Grant, 77, of 11 sexual offences against four victims committed between 1970 and 2012.
Investigators launched the inquiry in 2023 after a survivor reported nearly 20 years of abuse, revealing that Grant groomed vulnerable young men through coercive control over a 40-year period.
Grant held senior roles at Muswell Hill Baptist Church and Billingham Baptist Church, and served as moderator for the London Baptist Association, allowing him access to multiple district churches.
Detective Constable Liam Levy praised the 'courage and bravery' of survivors, as Wood Green Crown Court will sentence Grant on September 11 while police seek other potential victims.
