Former priest Chris Brain found guilty of 17 counts of indecent assault
Christopher Brain abused his leadership of the evangelical Nine O'Clock Service to sexually assault nine women, isolating them from family and exerting control, prosecutors said.
- On Wednesday, August 20, a jury at Inner London Crown Court found Christopher Brain guilty on 17 counts of indecent assault related to nine women from the Nine O'Clock Service, Sheffield.
- The Nine O'Clock Service began in Sheffield in 1986 and prosecutors said it targeted young people with rave-style worship, evolving into a "cult" where Brain controlled and isolated female followers.
- The trial heard some assaults occurred during massages given to Brain by the homebase team, known as the 'Lycra Nuns,' who cared for him and performed household tasks.
- Today, August 21, the 11-strong jury was discharged after failing to reach verdicts on four indecent assault counts and one rape allegation; the Crown Prosecution Service set a hearing for September 4 to consider a retrial.
- The Church of England had previously fast-tracked Brain's ordination in 1991 due to NOS's success, but the group collapsed in 1995 amid concerns about his behaviour, with Bishop of Sheffield Pete Wilcox calling it "an appalling abuse of power and leadership that should never have occurred.
