Ex-NRL Star Trent Merrin Charged over Alleged $140,000 Bitcoin Theft in Shocking Fraud Case
Trent Merrin allegedly used deceptive means to steal $140,000 in cryptocurrency from a 29-year-old victim, police said, with court proceedings set for early December.
On Tuesday, Trent Merrin was arrested at his Shellharbour home and charged with stealing $140,000 worth of cryptocurrency after allegedly using deceptive means, police say.
After retiring in 2021, Merrin completed 250 first grade games and played more than 150 matches for St George Illawarra Dragons, with stints at Penrith Panthers and Leeds Rhinos.
Investigators seized electronic devices from Merrin's Barrack Point home for forensic examination, and 9 News understands the alleged fraud involves Bitcoin while Merrin has been active in cryptocurrency since retirement.
Merrin was granted conditional bail and is due to appear before Port Kembla Local Court on December 3.
The arrest comes one year after police began investigations into the alleged theft from a 29-year-old man’s cryptocurrency account, and he was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station and charged with dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage by deception.
