Former North West Premier Bushy Maape Dies at 68
Mokgosi said Maape, 68, died after a short illness, following months of health problems that kept him out of office in 2024.
On Saturday, former North West Premier Bushy Maape died in a Johannesburg hospital following a short illness, as confirmed by North West Premier Lazarus Mokgosi.
Maape led North West province from September 2021 to May 2024 after Job Mokgoro stepped down, having previously overseen RDP programs and strategic planning.
Honored as a "freedom fighter" by the ANC, Maape was imprisoned on Robben Island during apartheid, where he completed degrees from Unisa and the UWC while incarcerated.
In 2023, Maape sparked debate about service delivery after claiming roads between Mahikeng and Rustenburg were in "perfect condition," remarks that dominated headlines.
Following the 2024 elections, Maape did not return to office after receiving treatment in Thailand; Mokgosi praised his "selflessness and servitude," stating his memory will forever remain.
