Gerhart Baum was Minister of the Interior under Helmut Schmidt, but he wrote history as the last important representative of the left-liberal wing of the FDP. Now he has died.
The former Federal Minister of the Interior and Free Democrat Gerhart Baum died at the age of 92. This was confirmed by the FDP parliamentary group. Baum was Minister of the Interior under the then Chancellor Schmidt from 1978 to 1982. Until 1994 Baum was also a member of the Bundestag.
He was the doyen of liberalism in Germany. The former Interior Minister of the FDP experienced a career break after the end of the social liberal coalition - because he remained true to his beliefs.
Like no other, he stood for the left-liberal wing of the FDP, was Interior Minister under Helmut Schmidt. Now Gerhart Baum has died.
