UK's JD Sports appoints former IKEA boss Peter Agnefjäll as chair
Peter Agnefjäll brings retail leadership and board experience as JD Sports seeks growth despite an uncertain consumer backdrop.
- On Friday, JD Sports announced that former Ikea Group President and CEO Peter Agnefjäll will become the new chair of the board, effective September 1, succeeding interim chair Darren Shapland.
- The appointment follows the abrupt April departure of Andrew Higginson, who Shapland replaced after reports emerged that Higginson failed in an attempt to oust CEO Régis Schultz.
- Bringing two decades of experience at Ikea, Agnefjäll previously chaired Dutch-Belgian supermarket firm Ahold Delhaize and held board roles at Wizz Air, Deichmann, and WPP.
- JD Sports cautioned that the Middle East conflict could increase costs and weaken demand, noting a drop in underlying sales during the 2025 Christmas period.
- "I am excited to be joining the group and look forward to working with the board and leadership team to leverage JD's strengths," Agnefjäll stated, emphasizing deepened international roots.
