Tragedy in Colombia: 23-Year-Old Israeli Killed in Paragliding Crash
A 23-year-old Israeli tourist was killed Thursday in a paragliding accident in Colombia after the tandem paraglider he was riding in crashed into a wooded ravine. The local flight instructor accompanying him was critically injured and rushed to a hospital. The fatal accident occurred at approximately noon in the San Félix area of Colombia’s Antioquia Department, along the Medellín-San Pedro de los Milagros road. The two-person paraglider reportedly lost control before plunging into a heavily wooded area. According to local officials and witnesses, strong winds and difficult weather conditions were reported in the area at the time and may have contributed to the crash. Emergency personnel, including firefighters, ambulances and rescue vehicles, were dispatched to the scene. Rescuers recovered the body of the Israeli victim and evacuated the badly injured instructor, who was reported to be in critical condition. Colombian prosecutors opened an investigation and began collecting evidence at the crash site in an effort to determine precisely what caused the paraglider to go down. Local authorities also inspected the paragliding company involved in the flight and reportedly found its operations to be in order. The investigation nevertheless remained ongoing as officials sought to establish the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Following news of the accident, Rabbi Levi Vanunu, the Chabad shliach in the area, began working closely with the Israeli Embassy and Colombian authorities to assist with arrangements. Rabbi Vanunu and Israeli diplomatic officials were working around the clock to expedite the necessary bureaucratic procedures and arrange for the victim’s aron to be returned to Eretz Yisroel for kevurah as soon as possible. {Matzav.com}
