Former assistant principal in Virginia set for trial 3 years after 6-year-old student shot teacher
Ebony Parker is charged with eight felony counts of child neglect after a jury awarded teacher Abby Zwerner $10 million in a related lawsuit.
The criminal trial for former Richneck Elementary School Assistant Principal Ebony Parker begins Monday in Newport News, Virginia, stemming from a 2023 shooting involving a 6-year-old student's loaded gun.
Prosecutors charged Parker with eight counts of felony child neglect, alleging she ignored repeated warnings that the student had a gun in his backpack before the shooting occurred.
Last November, a jury found Parker liable for gross negligence in a civil trial, awarding teacher Abby Zwerner $10 million; criminal conviction requires proof beyond a reasonable doubt, a higher standard.
Local defense attorney Eric Korslund noted jury selection may take longer than usual given the case's high-profile nature, while the defense argues Parker should not be held responsible.
Separately, the student's mother is serving prison time after pleading guilty to child neglect and weapons charges; criminal charges against school officials following shootings remain quite rare.
