Ford and Renault will produce two affordable Ford-branded electric vehicles using Renault's Ampere platform to lower costs and compete with rising Chinese EV marketshare, now at 11%.
- Dec. 9 — Ford Motor Co. and Renault Group announced a strategic partnership to produce two Ford-branded EVs on Renault's Ampere platform in northern France, targeting early 2028.
- To cut costs and boost competitiveness, Ford Motor Co. turned to Renault Group because Ford's European passenger-car market share fell from 6.1% in 2019 to 3.3% this year amid restructurings and plant closures.
- Under the plan, Ford will design the two small EVs while Renault Group will manufacture them using Ampere's ElectriCity expertise at plants in northern France, with models smaller than any Ford offers in the U.S.
- The companies also signed a letter of intent to explore LCV development and manufacturing, stressing it is not a merger and will complement Ford's partnership with Volkswagen.
- Renault's global partnership push, including work with Geely in Brazil, shows a wider alliance strategy as Chinese EV marketshare peaks at 13% in 2028 then slides to 11.7% in 2030.
