Ford Government Overhauls High School Grading System
The new formula makes classroom work 65% of final marks and gives most high school courses mandatory written exams, officials said.
Education Minister Paul Calandra announced on Monday that Ontario will mandate final exams and include attendance in high school grades starting this fall, aiming to provide a more consistent marking formula for students.
Calandra stated the Ministry implemented these changes after hearing from educators across Ontario who sought better control of their classrooms, identifying attendance and participation as an effective management tool.
Under the new policy, 65 per cent of final marks reflect classroom work, while the remaining 35 per cent is split between final evaluations and attendance; grading scales vary by grade level.
Critics, including NDP education critic Chandra Pasma and OSSTF vice-president Colin Matthew, argued the policy is a "cookie-cutter approach" that ignores individual student needs and fails to address complex attendance issues.
The Ministry will monitor the policy over the next year to determine if refinements are necessary, while Calandra suggested elementary teachers have expressed interest in adopting these changes for younger students.
