Japan Look to Turn Tables on Mentors Brazil on World Cup Stage
Japan have won 1 of 14 meetings with Brazil and now face a knockout test against Carlo Ancelotti’s team after their October comeback victory.
On Monday, Brazil faces Japan in the World Cup Round of 32 in Houston, offering coach Carlo Ancelotti a chance for revenge following a difficult Tokyo collapse early in his tenure.
The five-time world champions suffered a 3-2 defeat to Japan in October 2025, squandering a 2-0 lead by conceding three goals in less than 20 minutes in a friendly.
Technical adviser Zico highlighted Japan's progress, noting 23 of their 26 players feature in major European leagues. He said, "Japan are at a more competitive level now."
Buoyed by a victory over Scotland, Brazil enters the knockout match with Vinicius Jr scoring four goals and Neymar returning to the squad after three years away.
Japan manager Hajime Moriyasu expects a difficult test against a motivated Brazil side, though injuries have sidelined captain Wataru Endo, Kaoru Mitoma, and Takumi Minamino.
