Video shows surfer being rescued by RNLI after powerful rip current dragged him out to sea

Rescued after drifting over half a mile due to a powerful rip current, surfer Ben Fraser was saved by Porthcawl RNLI amid force 7/8 winds and rough seas.

  • A dog walker saw him wave and dialled 999 to alert the Coastguard, prompting the Atlantic 85 lifeboat Rose of the Shires to launch shortly after 7.30pm and pull him aboard.
  • Thankfully Ben Fraser was in good spirits and unharmed, and he thanked the woman who called 999 and the volunteer crew; Porthcawl RNLI reminded beachgoers to wear a leash, check tide and weather.
  • Amid ended RNLI lifeguard patrols on most beaches, Gareth Collins said the rescue highlights risks outside patrol season and the need to heed local signage at Rest Bay, Porthcawl, Wales.
