Floods in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire leave at least 24 dead following torrential rains
Emergency crews rescued more than 470 people as authorities warned the death toll could rise with more rain expected this week.
- Floods and landslides triggered by torrential rains in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire capital cities left at least 24 people dead on Tuesday, as emergency workers pulled hundreds of stranded residents from submerged buildings.
- President John Dramani Mahama stated approximately 140 millimetres of rain fell on Accra, far exceeding the highest single-day rainfall of about 56 millimetres recorded last year.
- The Ghana National Fire Service reported rescue teams saved more than 470 people, though at least 12 deaths were confirmed within Ghana, including a mother and child swept away in the Achimota-Agbogbloshie district.
- Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak acknowledged on Monday the government's response could have been better after opposition criticism, while officials announced $27 million would be released for flood relief efforts.
- The World Meteorological Organization noted that deadly floods frequently impact this region, which remains highly vulnerable to extreme weather despite contributing only a small fraction of global greenhouse gas emissions.

A severe flood has shaken Ghana. After heavy rains, at least twelve people have died and thousands have lost their homes.
The Ghanaian capital Accra has been under water since Monday 29 June, with my firefighters announcing a first count of 12 dead and already warning that it could increase. Nearly 39,000 people have been evacuated. If rains and floods are frequent in the country, this is the most rainy month of June in the country's history.
