Hundreds told to evacuate as tropical storm remnants cause Colorado mountain streams to flood
Heavy rains increased Vallecito Creek’s flow from 80 to over 6,000 cubic feet per second, forcing nearly 350 homes to evacuate and shelters to open, officials said.
- On Saturday, La Plata County officials ordered immediate evacuations after levee breaches near Vallecito Creek north of Bayfield, and the Upper Pine River Fire Protection District issued evacuations just after 10 a.m. with zones from Safley Road to Mushroom Lane.
- Heavy rain from Tropical Storm Priscilla sent Vallecito Creek's flow skyrocketing from 80 to 6,130 cfs within 48 hours, National Weather Service said.
- Nearly 350 homes were evacuated, with more than 380 homes in north Vallecito under orders, and about 57 people checked in by 4:40 p.m. at Bayfield High School, 800 County Road 501.
- La Plata County officials reported damage to dozens of homes and infrastructure, estimating 40 to 50 homes damaged and at least 18 surrounded by water, while several roads including County Road 501 closed.
- The National Weather Service issued flood warnings through Tuesday for La Plata, Archuleta, Hinsdale and San Juan counties as forecasters expect another surge Monday and Tuesday, raising flood risks.
