Update: Flood Advisory Active for Los Angeles and Ventura Counties Until Early Wednesday Evening
Flood watch covers Bay Area through Friday with potential for rivers and creeks to overflow, affecting urban and low-lying areas, National Weather Service said.
- On Monday, the National Weather Service issued a flood watch at 3:34 a.m., effective Tuesday 10 a.m. through Friday Dec. 26 at 10 p.m., covering the San Francisco Bay shoreline, San Francisco Peninsula, and Santa Clara Valley.
- Forecasters say excessive rainfall and saturated soils produce runoff that may raise creeks, streams and rivers above their banks, with low-lying, poor-drainage and urban areas especially vulnerable.
- Alameda and Contra Costa counties issued a flood advisory Monday at 8:37 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. and county agencies posted sandbag pickup instructions for San Mateo, Alameda and Santa Clara counties.
- Most flood deaths occur in vehicles, and drivers face acute risk because even 6 inches of swiftly moving water can knock people down and 12 inches can sweep away vehicles, NWS said.
- Given flash-flood behavior, the NWS recommends residents monitor forecasts, understand advisories versus warnings, and stay alert for possible Flood Warnings through Friday.
