Flight School Pilot Jumps to His Death Midair, Leaving Student to Land Plane
Prosecutors are investigating the instructor’s death as the student pilot, who had a license, radioed for help and made a safe landing.
- On Saturday, July 4, flight instructor Leandro Andrés Bertazzo jumped from a Cessna 150 over Toledo, Argentina, forcing his 22-year-old student, Rosario, to land the aircraft safely.
- Flying Parrot Cordoba director Eduardo Álvarez said Bertazzo, a four-year employee, arrived cheerful that morning and showed no signs of intent, even requesting a student pick him up.
- At roughly 850 feet above ground, Bertazzo told Rosario, "You know what you have to do, carry on," before jumping. Rosario notified air traffic control and landed the Cessna.
- Authorities recovered Bertazzo's body at the scene and declared him dead. Prosecutors took custody of the aircraft Tuesday and are working to clarify the incident's circumstances.
- Álvarez reported Rosario was in "complete shock" but successfully landed the plane. For mental health support, call or text 988 or visit 988lifeline.org.
