FAA Seeks Public Input on New Mar-a-Lago Flight Restrictions
The rule would require clearance and transponder use for aircraft below 2,000 feet, and the FAA says it would preserve airport operations.
- On Wednesday, the Federal Aviation Administration proposed a permanent Special Flight Rules Area around President Donald J. Trump International Airport in Palm Beach, Florida, to secure airspace near the Mar-a-Lago estate.
- The Secret Service requested this change citing 'adverse threat intelligence' regarding unauthorized aircraft and drones, replacing temporary security instructions scheduled to expire October 20, 2026.
- Under the proposal, aircraft within a one-nautical-mile radius and below 2,000 feet must maintain air traffic control contact and use assigned transponder codes; a blanket ban would render Runway 28R/10L unusable.
- More than 6,000 noise complaints from residents in Flamingo Park, Grandview Heights, and El Cid prompted Palm Beach County and the Town of Palm Beach to continue challenging the FAA over flight-path changes.
- Drone expert Brett Velicovich warned that airspace designations alone cannot deter determined attackers, citing the 2024 Butler, Pennsylvania incident, as the FAA accepts public comments through October 2, 2026.
