Flames legend Jarome Iginla battling health issues
The Hockey Hall of Famer says he has spent more than a year getting tests and treatment as doctors investigate possible metal toxicity.
On Tuesday, Hockey Hall of Famer Jarome Iginla disclosed he is battling significant neurological health issues, which he believes stem from hip replacement surgery he underwent several years ago.
Iginla told Sportsnet's Eric Francis he has elevated mercury levels and suspects metal ions from cobalt-chromium hip components caused the issue; a 2022 study links such metal-on-metal friction to neurological damage.
These complications have significantly altered Iginla's everyday life, affecting his energy levels, weight, and speech. Despite these challenges, he remains hopeful for full recovery while consulting with medical professionals.
Iginla, who spent 16 seasons in Calgary, holds franchise records for goals, points, and games played while serving as special advisor to Flames general manager Craig Conroy.
Fans and the hockey community are sending support as the 49-year-old navigates this period. Iginla stated, "Things are slowly getting under control, thanks be to God.
