Cordoba Mosque-Cathedral ‘Saved’ as Fire Extinguished
CÓRDOBA, SPAIN, AUG 10 – Firefighters contained a fire caused by a mechanical sweeping machine at the historic mosque-cathedral, preventing serious damage to the site visited by 2 million people annually, officials said.
- A fire broke out on Friday evening in a side chapel of the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba, Spain, causing visible smoke over the city before firefighters extinguished it.

- Firefighters, familiar with the site, contained the blaze rapidly, preventing spread beyond affected chapels and extinguishing flames by around 12:17 a.m.
- Dean-President Joaquín Alberto Nieva assessed damage as very small, limited to about 25 square metres of recently restored vaults and some artworks, while the mayor confirmed the monument is safe and open to visitors.
