Five people arrested on suspicion of local election fraud offences
Police say the five suspects, aged 23 to 47, are being questioned over claims that fake Independent candidates were used to split opposition votes.
- On Thursday, Greater Manchester Police arrested five people aged between 23 and 47 in the Ashton-under-Lyne area on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud following an investigation into the St Peter's ward election held on May 7.
- Internal Labour WhatsApp messages allegedly discussed planting stooge Independents to split opposition votes, and The Mill investigation linked three official backers of these alleged 'fake' candidates to the campaign launch of Labour candidate Atta Ul-Rasool.
- Marie Fairhurst and Muhammad Ali garnered a combined 291 votes despite having no online presence or campaigning, while Former Vice-Chair Philip Wilson-Marks alleged Councillor Vimal Choksi MBE proposed the tactic to him, including once in Angela Rayner's kitchen.
- Cllr Kaleel Khan, who managed Independent candidate Ahmed Mehmood's campaign, announced he will challenge Ul-Rasool's victory in the council chamber through a cross-party motion questioning the planted candidates.
- A Labour Party spokesperson categorically rejected any party involvement, stating no evidence has been presented, while police collaborate with the Electoral Commission to investigate whether the candidate process adhered to electoral legislation.
