Five Arrested for Corruption at Disaster Agency Amid Funding Concerns - Politics
On Wednesday, the Corruption Eradication Commission arrested five suspects for alleged procurement corruption at the National Disaster Mitigation Agency , involving collusion between officials and private vendors over emergency relief funds.
The investigation centers on BNPB's ready-to-use emergency funds, totaling Rp 4.62 trillion this year, where KPK chairman Setyo Budiyanto said officials allegedly used their status to approach vendors and arrange procurement for personal gain.
Investigators seized about 3.3 billion rupiah in cash, gold, and cryptocurrency; among detainees are procurement officer Gabriel Purwaka Sigit and Bima Setyawan, an expert staffer to BNPB chief Suharyanto.
BNPB acting spokesman Berton Panjaitan said the agency respects the legal process and will cooperate with investigators, while Indonesian MP Abdullah, also known as Abduh, demanded a comprehensive audit by the State Audit Board.
The case complicates disaster response efforts as Indonesia battles widespread forest fires and earthquake recovery; the KPK has not ruled out widening the investigation if further evidence emerges.
The Corruption Eradication Committee (KPK) has named five suspects in the corruption case of BNPB disaster funds, one of whom is the younger brother of BNPB Head Suharyanto, Bima Setyawan.
The Corruption Eradication Committee (KPK) conducted a sting operation (OTT) at the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) premises on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.
