First Nation Calls b.c. Premier Eby's Comments 'Deliberately Inflammatory'
Quw'utsun Nation says government comments on Aboriginal title ruling stir unneeded fears among 150+ landowners and contradict reconciliation efforts, Chief Cindy Daniels says.
- On Oct. 27, 2025, the Quw'utsun Nation criticized British Columbia Premier David Eby’s comments as `at best, misleading, and at worst, deliberately inflammatory` and said it did not seek to invalidate private land titles.
- The Aug. 7 B.C. Supreme Court ruling established Aboriginal title over Fraser River land, found Crown and city titles invalid, and Justice Barbara Young suspended the declaration for 18 months to allow arrangements.
- The nation said government and City of Richmond messaging was `negative and erroneous` and Mayor Malcolm Brodie warned more than 150 property owners the ruling `may compromise` their ownership.
- Eby said last week that anxiety among homeowners in Richmond is `totally reasonable` and the City of Richmond will host a public information session on Tuesday at the Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel.
- Chief Cindy Daniels said the ruling makes clear it is the B.C. government's job to advance reconciliation, and an Aug. 22, 2025 aerial view shows Road and Country Meadows Golf Course within Cowichan Nation claim boundaries.
