New Zealand’s Tyler Bindon and Mom Jenny Are the First Mother-Son Duo to Play in the World Cup
Tyler Bindon made World Cup history as a late substitute, joining Jenny Bindon in the first mother-son pair to play in the tournament.
On Monday, Tyler Bindon appeared as a substitute for New Zealand in their 2-2 draw with Iran at SoFi Stadium, joining his mother, Jenny Bindon, as the first mother-son pair to both play in the World Cup.
A goalkeeper for New Zealand between 2004 and 2014, Jenny Bindon represented the Football Ferns in the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2007 and 2011, plus the Olympic Games in 2008 and 2012.
Tyler, 21, is a center back for Premier League club Nottingham Forest who moved to California at age 12 when his mother coached at UCLA; both parents cheered from the stands in Inglewood, California.
Elijah Just scored twice for The All Whites before Mohammad Mohebbi knotted the game in the 64th minute, forcing New Zealand and Iran to battle until the final whistle in their 2-2 draw.
While more than two dozen father-son duos have appeared in the World Cup—including Claudio Reyna and Gio Reyna—the Bindons are the first mother-son pairing. The All Whites face Egypt on Sunday in Vancouver, British Columbia.
