First Minister Swinney Urges Prime Minister to ‘Turn Words into Action’ on Devolution
Swinney urged the Prime Minister to back deeper devolution and offered to expand local youth employment support as one in six young Scots are not in work or study.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham is meeting Scottish First Minister John Swinney and Welsh First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth in Glasgow today for the inaugural National Economic Council meeting focused on regional empowerment and reindustrialisation.
Burnham announced a £1 billion investment across the United Kingdom over the next four years to support regional development through his 'No10 North' initiative, aiming to 'rewire the state' with devolved governments.
Swinney is pressing the UK Government to deliver substantive devolution proposals, stating "the UK Government must ensure that any devolution proposals respect devolution in Scotland" to help grow the economy.
Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill was blocked from attending the Glasgow meeting on Thursday by Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly amid ongoing party tensions with DUP leader Gavin Robinson.
Separately, Chancellor John Healey announced a 'Back British' policy requiring overseas companies winning defense contracts worth £50 million or more to reinvest 100% of the contract value into the United Kingdom.
