Scottish government aiming to replicate chancellor's £100 energy payment scheme
The payment would cover about 1.9 million Scottish homes if Holyrood passes on the funding, with details due in the Scottish Budget on Dec. 3.
On Wednesday, Chancellor John Healey presented the UK Budget, prompting Deputy First Minister and Finance Secretary Jenny Gilruth to warn that the Scottish Government faces a real-terms cut of around £650 million next year.
In September, the Scottish Fiscal Commission warned that resource funding is expected to fall by 1.2 per cent in real terms in 2027-28, with capital funding facing a reduction of £87 million.
Despite the UK Government announcing a £600 million boost for Scotland, Gilruth confirmed the Scottish Government will pass on the £100 energy payment, though she maintained the headline figure masks a deeper funding cut.
Responding to the Budget, Scottish Labour leader Michael Marra welcomed the payment commitment, while Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay dismissed it as "a damp squib which will do nothing to boost economic growth."
Finance Secretary Gilruth will announce the Scottish Budget on December 3, incorporating the £600 million in additional UK funding as officials assess the final impact on public services.
