First Production KF-21 Boramae Delivered to ROKAF
The Air Force plans to field more than 100 KF-21 jets in phases by early 2030, officials said.
- On Tuesday, the first mass-produced KF-21 Boramae flew from the Korea Aerospace Industries Ltd. plant in Sacheon to Yecheon Air Base, marking the indigenous fighter jet's official delivery to the Air Force.
- South Korea launched the project in partnership with Indonesia to develop an advanced supersonic aircraft and replace aging F-4 fighters and F-5 jets, fulfilling a decadeslong initiative dating back to President Kim Dae-jung.
- Accompanied by an FA-50 light attack aircraft and T-50 Golden Eagle trainer, the jet traveled roughly 165 km from Sacheon Air Base to its new base. The Air Force reactivated the 156th Fighter Squadron about 14 years after deactivation to support operations.
- Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Son Sug-rag called on service members to "take immense pride and responsibility in managing our nation's premier fighter jet," emphasizing the KF-21's role as a shield defending the Republic.
- The Air Force plans to field more than 100 KF-21 jets in phases by early 2030, with KAI manufacturing 40 units focused on air-to-air capabilities before producing 80 additional jets equipped with long-range air-to-ground missiles.
