Firm fined £1m after man killed by falling window
The firms were convicted of ignoring foreseeable risks after a 130kg pane fell 26 storeys and killed driver Mick Ferris, officials said.
- Two firms were fined a total of £1.3 million on Thursday at Inner London Crown Court for the 2018 death of Mick Ferris, crushed by a 130kg window falling 300ft from The Corniche in Vauxhall, London.
- St James Group Ltd and Lindner Prater were found guilty of ignoring "foreseeable risks," with jurors told the design was "not safe" because it opened outwards and relied on a single metal "restrictor" that could be dislodged.
- HSE principal inspector James Goldfinch noted "the fact lessons had not been learnt from a near miss the year before," making the incident "all the more galling" for safety oversight failures.
- Rachel, the victim's widow, stated in court that her husband's death was "so sudden" and "could have been prevented," adding that "if somebody had done something differently" it would have changed their lives.
- Judge Boyle ordered both companies to pay £125,000 in costs each, while a St James spokesperson acknowledged the sentencing and stated safety remains their "highest priority.
