Fireworks Launched at Police Amid Bonfire Night Trouble in Edinburgh
Police said youths blocked roads and set small fires as officers and firefighters responded to disorder linked to Bonfire Night.
On Thursday, youths blocked Oxgangs Road North in Edinburgh, launching fireworks at Police Scotland officers responding to the Bonfire Night disorder. No injuries were reported during the incident.
Police Scotland mounted a major deployment for Bonfire Night, calling in assistance from forces in England and Wales. Chief Superintendent David Robertson stated the force was prepared to protect communities from those with "other intentions."
Firefighters with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service extinguished several small fires in bins and parks across Colinton Mains, Firrhill Park, and Wester Hailes. Locals reported youths launching fireworks at emergency services.
Community safety minister Kirsten Oswald noted mutual aid is "something that happens on a reasonably regular basis," describing emergency services' work as "absolutely critical" given Bonfire Night's unique circumstances.
Officers remain in the area as Police Scotland inquiries continue to trace those involved. November 5 has brought similar unrest to parts of Scotland in previous years, necessitating tonight's large deployment.
