Firefighters to continue tackling industrial units blaze into weekend
About 100 firefighters are working to contain the blaze after fertiliser exploded and residents were evacuated, officials said.
- On Friday at 4:50 PM, emergency crews responded to a large industrial fire on Southend Road between East Hanningfield and Rettendon, prompting Essex County Fire and Rescue Service to declare a major incident.
- Fertilizer inside one of the units exploded, causing sounds heard across the county, and nearby residents were evacuated while the fire is being extinguished.
- About 100 firefighters initially tackled the flames, with 50 personnel remaining on scene alongside the England Ambulance Service hazardous area response team.
- Officials advised the public to close doors and windows if smoke is detected, while area manager Dave Bond apologized for the inconvenience caused by the ongoing emergency.
- The incident will continue into the weekend, and authorities requested that the public stay away from the area to allow emergency operations to proceed safely.
