Europe 2026: Wildfires Rage in Portugal, Spain and Greece
Hundreds of firefighters and reinforcements from Spain and Italy are battling blazes that have burned thousands of hectares and forced evacuations.
Hundreds of firefighters battled wildfires across Portugal, Greece, and Spain on Sunday, with Italy and Spain sending reinforcements to Portugal to help contain a massive blaze burning for more than three days.
A fast-moving blaze erupted Saturday evening at a recycling plant near the Oraiokastro suburb of Thessaloniki, triggering evacuation alerts for three suburbs and a facility housing 157 people with disabilities.
Fire spokesman Ioannis Artopoios stated that about 85% of wildfires in Greece were caused by negligence, while authorities arrested a 76-year-old man for allegedly sparking a blaze with his vehicle.
Emergency crews deployed 16 water-dropping planes and six helicopters to the Mandra area, while in Spain, a fire in the Girona region scorched nearly 2,200 hectares after breaking out Friday.
Greece is integrating an array of satellites launched in May to monitor for wildfires, a strategic shift reflecting climate change threats after a 2023 fire became the largest wildfire recorded in the European Union.
Several major forest fires have hit Europe in recent days, the AP news agency reports. A large fire broke out on the outskirts of the Greek city of Thessaloniki on Saturday and residents in the area were urged to evacuate their homes. A man is suspected of starting the fire with sparks from a vehicle. Over the weekend, firefighters have also fought large forest fires in other parts of Greece, as well as Portugal and Spain.
