The fire in Gironde, which burned 42,000 hectares for ten days, is finally "fixed", said Laurent Nuñez on Saturday. More than 10,000 additional evacuees will be able to return to their homes. This new authorization brings to 208 000, out of about 220,000, the number of inhabitants who can return home.
With the massive 42,000-hectare fire barely contained on Saturday, August 1st, the Gironde region is already struggling to heal its wounds, amidst still-smoldering embers and decimated forests, in order to rebuild its devastated villages, ravaged landscapes, and tarnished image.
