Blaze at Wellington Airport Causes Chaos: Flights Diverted, Terminal Evacuation
Nine fire trucks responded after a machinery fire activated sprinklers and forced the evacuation, while Air New Zealand held flights and passengers were stranded.
On Friday night, Wellington Airport evacuated its main terminal and southwest pier after a fire broke out in a piece of machinery, triggering sprinkler systems. Emergency services including FENZ and the Airport Fire Service responded; no injuries were reported.
The fire originated in a roof section near the security area around 7:15 PM, escalating to a second alarm level. Witnesses reported seeing smoke billowing from the building as firefighters attacked the blaze from above using nine appliances.
Describing the scene as "extremely unorganised," one traveler waiting for Air New Zealand flight NZ377 noted that gate staff appeared confused and provided no instructions for about 10 minutes. Passengers sat outside for at least an hour with no communication about what was happening.
Air New Zealand held all flights in and out of Wellington until further notice, leaving travelers stranded and unable to access luggage. The airline allowed customers to change flights free of charge and advised them to check the AirNZ app for updates.
Operations are expected to resume as usual on Saturday, though officials warned of lingering flow-on flight disruptions. Authorities confirmed no injuries occurred and have launched an investigation into the machinery fire.
