FIR against IIT-Bombay over student's death after ChatGPT-linked exam row
On Friday, 22-year-old Sahil Ravindra Wakode died by suicide in his room at Hostel Number 4 on the IIT Bombay Powai campus, and Mumbai Police have registered an FIR to investigate the incident.
Authorities stated the student was caught using his mobile phone and ChatGPT to seek answers during an examination; IIT officials claimed no disciplinary action was initiated, noting the instructor and department head provided counseling instead.
The institute said it was "deeply saddened" by the student's death and is providing support to those affected, marking the third reported suicide at the IIT Powai campus within seven months.
Students launched a protest alleging authorities fail to address mental health concerns, as DCP Dattatray Nalawade reported police personnel were deployed on campus to facilitate administration discussions.
Demonstrators continue to demand a detailed probe into the circumstances surrounding the death, while the institute reiterated it is reviewing the matter alongside the police as talks with protesters remain active.
