Kalle Lappinen had written the first signal off as buried ore. He went back to it, and there were coins there too. The museum’s own announcement came with the qualifiers already attached: the coins have not been cleaned, separated or counted, and the exact weight, the number and the more precise dating all wait on further study. A second statement ten days later added a limit on the word Viking.
