Blazers’ Eyebrow-Raising Coaching Search Is Narrowing: Van Gundy, Splitter, Nori in the Mix

Marc Stein reported that interim coach Tiago Splitter, Jeff Van Gundy and Micah Nori are the finalists as Portland seeks a permanent replacement.

  • The Portland Trail Blazers have identified interim head coach Tiago Splitter, Los Angeles Clippers assistant Jeff Van Gundy, and Minnesota Timberwolves assistant Micah Nori as finalists for their vacant head coaching position, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.
  • Splitter, a former NBA center, led the Blazers to a 42-39 record and playoff berth after taking over for Chauncey Billups, though reports earlier this month suggested it was "unlikely" he would land the full-time role.
  • Van Gundy, the 64-year-old Clippers assistant, compiled a 430-318 head coaching record with the New York Knicks and Houston Rockets. Chris Haynes noted Van Gundy "has emerged as one of the finalists" for the position.
  • Minnesota Timberwolves lead assistant Micah Nori also joins the finalists list. The 52-year-old has served as an assistant coach since 2009 for franchises including the Toronto Raptors and Denver Nuggets.
  • Beyond these three, the Blazers have also conducted interviews with Houston Rockets assistant Royal Ivey and Denver Nuggets lead assistant Jared Dudley. Owner Tom Dundon has not yet offered Splitter a vote of confidence.
