The Senate is voting on the asylum laws of former Minister Faber. That vote can be followed live here from 1:00 PM.
The vote on new asylum laws in the Senate appears to be turning into a political power struggle. D66 has announced it will vote against both the laws and the accompanying amendment, the so-called novelle. Senator Paul van Meenen confirmed this to the ANP. This makes it difficult for Minister for Asylum Affairs Bart van den Brink (CDA) to gather sufficient support. Later today, the Senate will vote on the asylum legislation.
In a last-ditch effort, protesters are heading to the Senate on Tuesday to call on senators to vote against the asylum laws. Under the name Alliance Stop the Asylum Laws, which has been joined by over a hundred organizations, they aim to prevent, among other things, the criminalization of illegal residence in the Netherlands and the existence of two separate asylum statuses.
