Argentina and Spain Will Play for the World Cup Trophy and, in a First, the Winner Gets Rings
FIFA introduces championship rings for World Cup winners, a first for the organization, bringing an American sporting tradition to the global game with a limited edition of 2,026 rings.
On Friday, FIFA announced winners of Sunday's final between Spain and Argentina at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium will receive bespoke championship rings, adopting a North American sports tradition.
Championship rings are a staple of North American sports leagues including the NBA, NFL, NHL, and MLB, with the tradition dating back to at least 1893 when the Montreal Hockey Club received the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup.
FIFA will produce 2,026 individually numbered rings, with 30 presented to the winning team and 1,996 made available for public purchase. The estimated value of each ring could reach around $150,000.
Immediately after Sunday's final, the winning captain and coach will receive temporary rings to commemorate the occasion. FIFA said the final 30 rings will be custom-fitted and delivered later "to reflect the identity of the winning team."
This marks the first time in World Cup history that championship rings are awarded, a shift reflecting the increasing "Americanisation" of the tournament as it concludes at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium.
