Fifa Draws Cheers at the British Open. And It's Nothing to Do with Soccer
On Friday, Thai golfer Fifa Laopakdee shot 80 to miss the British Open cut at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England.
His father, Peter, chose the name Fifa as a baby in keeping with Thai culture, selecting it over Uefa to stand out professionally. Laopakdee prefers Fifa to his given name, Pongsapak.
Victory at last year's Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship secured the 21-year-old Arizona State University student a place at the Open. He missed the weekend at this year's Masters after shooting rounds of 80 and 75.
A self-described football fan, Laopakdee finds the Fifa association "extremely hilarious" and believes the nickname will make him more memorable as his golfing career progresses.
Despite missing recent cuts, the 21-year-old described major events as "a great opportunity" to embrace pressure while representing Asian amateurs internationally. His experience has been life-changing.
