The veil is thin. The verdant thicket of life safeguarding the joys of summer has used itself up. As the canopy withers into its slumber, death and decay are now able to peek down into our mortal world. They are curious. What are all these little creatures up to in the darkness of autumn? We are uncovered by leaves, seen by the darkness and afraid. And so we put on our masquerades, our rituals and revelries, our festivals.
