Woman jailed for seven years for handing over girl, 3, for female genital mutilation
Amina Noor, a woman from Harrow, London, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for assisting in the female genital mutilation of a child in Kenya 18 years ago. She is the first person to be convicted of this crime in the UK.
Noor took the child to a private house where the procedure took place. The victim, now 21, suffered physical and emotional pain as a result.
FGM is a harmful practice that is often carried out without the person's consent and can lead to long-term health problems. Noor's conviction is intended to encourage others to report similar crimes.
A British woman was sentenced to seven years in prison on Friday for being involved in the circumcision of a girl. According to the police in London, this is only the second time someone has been convicted of doing so since genital mutilation became a criminal offence in the country in 1985, and it is the first conviction for circumcision carried out abroad.
