FG to Remove Data Charges for Millions of Nigerian Students
The programme will give about 5 million students 100MB of free data daily for approved learning platforms, officials said.
- On Thursday in Abuja, Minister of Education Dr Tunji Alausa launched the Zero-Rated Access to Educational Platforms and Content initiative, which begins October 1, 2026, removing data costs for approved digital learning.
- Facing significant education sector challenges, the government introduced the program to bridge the digital divide. UNICEF reports millions of Nigerian children remain out of school, with access constrained by inadequate connectivity and high data costs.
- The initiative provides 5 million eligible students with 100MB of free daily data for approved educational content. This allocation totals about 15 billion megabytes monthly, representing an estimated N180 billion in annual data value.
- NCC Executive Vice Chairman Dr Aminu Maida confirmed that telecommunications operators have upgraded about 12,000 sites in 2026, with approximately 70 per cent already completed. These upgrades support expanding connectivity to underserved communities.
- The government will utilize the Learner Identification Number to track students' educational journeys from primary through tertiary levels under President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda. The program aims to ensure neither geography nor poverty prevents access.
