Nigeria: Govt Approves Road Map for Nigeria's Power Sector
- On May 5, 2025, during a Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja, the Federal Government formally approved a comprehensive electricity sector reform framework aimed at transforming Nigeria's power industry.
- The NIEP was presented to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the end of 2024 and was created through extensive collaboration with stakeholders from the public and private sectors, civil society, and academia.
- The policy, structured in eight chapters, addresses Nigeria’s electricity sector history, market design, climate initiatives, regulatory reforms, and aims to resolve infrastructure and capital challenges.
- Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu highlighted that the NIEP replaces the 2001 policy and establishes a comprehensive framework to support sustainable electricity production, delivery, and the incorporation of renewable energy technologies.
- The ratification represents a crucial advancement in updating Nigeria’s power sector, speeding up current reforms, and encouraging investment to ensure sustainable energy availability and support continued economic development.
