FF's Malcolm Byrne arrested on suspicion of drink driving
Byrne failed a breathalyser and provided a urine sample as Gardaí investigate the arrest during a bank holiday roads policing operation.
On Thursday morning, Fianna Fáil TD Malcolm Byrne was arrested on suspicion of drink driving after failing a breath test at a mandatory Garda checkpoint in Dublin city centre.
The arrest occurred during a Garda Roads Policing Operation running throughout the June Bank Holiday weekend, where Gardaí conduct statutory Mandatory Intoxicant Testing at high-visibility checkpoints.
Byrne, chair of the Oireachtas Committee on Artificial Intelligence, was stopped at 5am while travelling to Dublin Airport and subsequently provided a urine sample at Pearse Street Garda station.
Fianna Fáil stated it would not be appropriate to comment further while the investigation is ongoing, while Byrne confirmed he is "co-operating fully" with An Garda Síochána.
Gardaí reported over 140 arrests for driving under the influence during the first four days of the operation, while detecting over 3,140 speeding offences and three fatal road traffic collisions.
