Marielle Heller will adapt the 1992 animated classic and produce the film as Amazon MGM Studios expands its live-action fantasy slate.
- On Friday, Amazon MGM Studios announced it is developing a live-action adaptation of the 1992 animated classic FernGully: The Last Rainforest, with filmmaker Marielle Heller set to write and direct.
- The 1992 animated classic followed magical rainforest inhabitants fighting to save their home from the polluting entity Hexxus, with director Bill Kroyer saying the film's environmental message is "more critical than it has ever been."
- Amazon MGM has partnered with Machine Advisors LLC on the project, while producers include Stacey Sher, Leah Holzer, Heller, and the Sheinberg Feige Organization.
- Heller's recent work includes the Amy Adams-starrer Nightbitch, and she is reuniting with Tom Hanks for the baseball film Comebacker, which Sony Pictures acquired at auction.
- Original film highlights include songs by Elton John and Jimmy Buffett, as well as the "Toxic Love" musical number performed by the villainous Hexxus.
