FEMA plans to release nearly $1 billion in security funding after CNN report on proposal to slash it
UNITED STATES, AUG 2 – FEMA reversed planned cuts to grant programs after review, preserving the Urban Areas Security Initiative which provides over $500 million for major city emergency preparedness.
- After CNN reported proposed cuts last week, FEMA announced on Friday that applications are open for more than a dozen grant programs, making nearly $1 billion available to communities across the country.
- Internal memos showed FEMA halted new grant selections at DHS's direction, and a DHS spokesperson called for cutting 'unaccountable programs'.
- According to FEMA’s own memo, the reversal preserves the Urban Areas Security Initiative , which FEMA warned would create `a less secure nation, especially at the border and in some of the nation’s most targeted cities, including Miami, Washington, DC, and Dallas`.
- States can now apply for the grants, as FEMA said it is committed to empowering states to manage disaster preparedness, response, and recovery.
- According to the notice, the release aligns with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s revised priorities, including protecting soft targets and supporting Homeland Security Task Forces, by the end of September.
