Feds reopen probe into LAUSD race-based program
The civil rights office will examine whether the plan gives services and funding based on race, after a similar complaint was dismissed in 2024.
- On Thursday, the Department of Education and its Office for Civil Rights reopened an investigation into the Los Angeles Unified School District's Black Student Achievement Plan following a complaint from Defending Education alleging race-based discrimination.
- Originally launched in 2021 to support Black students who comprise about 7% of the district, the program underwent a 2024 overhaul to comply with Supreme Court rulings on race-based admissions.
- Sarah Parshall Perry, vice president of Defending Education, alleged "racial politicking and misuse of federal funding" in a statement, citing a late 2024 board meeting recording featuring Jackie Goldberg and Supt Alberto Carvalho.
- The District stated it "offers a wide range of programs and resources" to support students regardless of race, aligning with state and federal law and its Non-Discrimination Policy.
- Carvalho remains on administrative leave following an FBI raid on his home and office earlier this year, an investigation reportedly concerning procurement of a failed chatbot product the district purchased.
