Federal, Ontario governments contributing $3B to small nuclear reactor project

The $3 billion investment by federal and Ontario governments will fund four small modular reactors producing 1,200 megawatts to power 1.2 million homes.

  • On Thursday, Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced $2 billion and $1 billion respectively toward four small modular reactors at Darlington Nuclear Generating Station site in the GTA.
  • The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission granted Ontario Power Generation a licence earlier this year and construction began in the spring, with OPG saying the entire project should cost about $21 billion and the first SMR is budgeted at $7.7-billion.
  • The province says once all four SMRs are running they will produce 1,200 megawatts, with half of the federal $2-billion allocated for the first reactor and the rest for future units.
  • Prime Minister Mark Carney said the investment will extend Canada’s world leadership in clean energy and added the Darlington New Nuclear Project to a national-interest designation, making Canada first in the G7 with a new reactor.
  • Ontario Power Generation is in the early stages of building the first SMR next to Darlington, which officials say is on time and on budget while sharing systems with future units.
