Nearly 200 dogs seized from ex-NFL player in dogfighting case

  • Former NFL running back LeShon Johnson, age 54, was indicted and arrested on March 20, 2025, for allegedly operating a large dogfighting venture, and later released on bail.
  • Johnson's indictment stems from possessing pit bull-type dogs for use in an animal fighting venture, as well as for selling, transporting, and delivering dogs for the same purpose.
  • Authorities seized 190 dogs from Johnson in October 2024, believed to be the most ever taken from one person in a federal dogfighting investigation, at his operation "Mal Kant Kennels" located in Broken Arrow and Haskell, Oklahoma.
  • Johnson, who previously pleaded guilty to state animal fighting charges in 2004, allegedly bred dogs that won as many as five fights and sold "stud rights" and their offspring to grow the dogfighting industry, profiting financially through trafficking across the U.S.
  • If convicted on all 21 counts, Johnson could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each charge, as the FBI views animal cruelty investigations as a precursor to larger, organized crime efforts, similar to trafficking and homicides.
