The Austrian government has agreed to establish an independent and non-referral federal prosecutor's office.
In Austria, the Ministry of Justice is at the head of the public prosecutors' offices – but probably not for long. The government now wants to establish a new supervisory body, thus preventing political interference.
The right of instruction is therefore to be transferred from the Minister of Justice to a collegial dreiersenat. The panel is to be elected for six years and the chair is to change every two years.


Just in time for today's Council of Ministers, ÖVP, SPÖ and Neos have reached an agreement. A concrete bill has yet to be drawn up.
