US nuclear airmen plead guilty to false statements in shooting that suspended Sig Sauer M18 use
Two airmen admitted to providing false statements to cover up the shooting death of Airman Brayden Lovan, obstructing the investigation, officials said.
- On Friday, the 90th Missile Wing at F.E. Warren Air Force Base said Airman 1st Class Sarbjot Badesha and Airman 1st Class Matthew Rodriguez pleaded guilty in separate summary courts-martial to making false official statements related to the July 20 death of Airman Brayden Lovan.
- According to the Air Force statement, White-Allen allegedly pulled his duty-issued M18 handgun, pointed it at Lovan's chest in a joking manner, and it discharged, with White-Allen allegedly instructing Badesha and Rodriguez to lie about the incident.
- Air Force Global Strike Command suspended use of the M18 at nuclear sites for about a month before lifting the pause in late August after laboratory tests found no defects, while lawsuits allege Sig Sauer's P320 pistol can fire unintentionally, which Sig Sauer denies.
- Both airmen also received administrative demotions; Marcus White-Allen was found dead on base on Oct. 8, and Air Force legal proceedings were suspended with the investigation ongoing.
- The Air Force Office of Special Investigations has been investigating White-Allen's role in the July 20 incident, and Terry Holmes, 90th Missile Wing commander, said the focus remains on justice and supporting families and individuals affected during the ongoing investigation.
